Mayers Chosen For 2010 Youth Tour

Beltrami Electric has selected Kelliher High School’s Deborah Mayers as the cooperative’s representative for the 2010 Youth Tour, where she will join hundreds of high school students representing their cooperatives on an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., June 12-17, 2010, as part of the annual Youth Tour sponsored by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, the Minnesota Rural Electric Association and Beltrami Electric Cooperative.
Ms. Mayers is very active in her school, church and community. She has served as the president and vice-president of the KHS chapter of the National Honor Society and performed in numerous school plays, band and choir. In addition, she is a member of the Spanish Club and Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD).
The tour includes visits to many of the National Mall memorials. Representatives will also spend a day on “The Hill” meeting with legislators and witnessing the day-to-day operations of the federal legislature. Deborah was selected based on her strong educational background and community involvements, qualities that Beltrami Electric Cooperative believes are important in our future community leaders.
In her essay about what life would be like without electricity, Deborah interviewed her 101-year old great-grandfather about his experience without having power on demand. He mentioned that things were a lot different back when he was her age, including having to cut ice out of a river in order to keep food cold in an ice chest. She pointed out that times sure have changed, especially as technology has evolved.
Deborah is the daughter of Calvin and Kalynn Mayers, Saum, Minn. The members of Beltrami Electric are proud to send such a well-rounded and community-minded individual to our nation’s capital as a representative of the Cooperative. Congratulations and good luck!
