Power has been restored to more than 16,800 Beltrami Electric members since an extreme storm with wind speeds of more than 100 mph uprooted, snapped and toppled trees onto power lines, homes, cabins, and businesses throughout the region early Saturday. The high winds, comparable to a Category 3 hurricane, caused extensive damage and widespread power outages, leaving nearly 90% of Beltrami Electric Cooperative members without power after the storm barreled through.
BEC crews have made significant progress. Additional crews from Roseau Electric Cooperative, PKM Electric Cooperative (Hallock), and North Itasca Electric Cooperative (Bigfork) are also assisting the restoration effort.
Remaining repairs for the 2,500 members without power are extensive, with more broken poles discovered as work continues. This storm has caused some of the worst damage our communities have seen in decades. BEC and its crews are thankful for continued patience and prayers for the safety of everyone — our members and our dedicated lineworkers alike.
Crews will complete Day 2 restoration efforts tonight at dusk and resume tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. Many of them are returning to their own homes still without power, after working long hours in today’s heat and difficult conditions.
BEC reminds everyone to PLEASE stay safe - avoid going near any downed power lines, as they may still be energized. If you see a tree on a line or a dangerous situation - stay clear and call 1-800-955-6083. Crews will be working to safely restore power as efficiently as possible.
