You know that happy feeling when you find money you forgot you had in a coat pocket or a pair of jeans? You count your cash and celebrate! Found money is awesome!

You can experience that same joy from an unexpected source. Thanks to federal energy efficiency incentives, Uncle Sam could be paying you serious bucks for energy-efficient efforts that you’ve already done or are planning to do.

Decoding Federal Incentives

Let’s unpack the details. If you’ve recently bought some shiny new appliances or made home weatherization improvements, you could be eligible for federal tax credits for energy-efficient improvements. Upgrades like a new HVAC, heat pump, and water heater can make your home more comfortable and energy-efficient, saving you money now and in the future. Ditto, if you’re considering the switch to an electric vehicle, or a rooftop solar system; there may be federal energy tax credits available through the Inflation Reduction Act.

Don’t Leave Money on the Table

Here’s how it works. When filing your federal tax return, you must complete IRS Form 5695
